People always asking de coco what is carnival about? Since dey hear Trini carnival is de best in de worl. Dey say 2005 carnival was de best dey ever went to, so naturally dey come to de Coco payorl, dey hear how he is de Cultural Coco in de know!

And de same time dey asking, why you name coco?
What kinda name is dat? and is whey you come from?
Well, if you is ah true true Trinidadian you already know de answer for de fus question, as ah matter Of fact you just hah to be a true true true West Indian to know what ah does tell dem;

As for de first question, ah go answer. The other question is because alluy is just plain and simply put; Too macco-cious!!! In odda words, yuh too damn farse!! Mind yuh own business, macco-mere!
Well, when dey ask is so de story start too!

So, ah start wid de beginning, the first question, how it all started, ah historical history lesson if yuh please! Ah say;

How it had de Caribs and Arawaks –
How it had no european dey –
How de europeans invade –
De fuss man was columbus, dey say –
How he and he people take over !

Ah tell dem how after he come and gone and Arawaks dead and gone
And Caribs eat and dead and gone
How in de process plenty europeans geh eat and dead and gone because of greed and attempts at slavery and tings
Dat odda europeans come and gone and den,

De slavery of we African brethren start –
And how dey treat dem –
And how dey kill dem, comin ova in de ships, pack up like sardines -
And how plenty jump ova board –
Plenty ah dem geh sick wid new diseases dey get from de europeans and on de boat –
And how wen dey reach dey was auctioned off –
And owned by europeans –
And dey no longer had their names –
But was known as de slave of Mr so and so-
And dey took on de name of their slave masters,

And for entertainment because de drums couldn’t be used, dey use to mimic dey masters dancing and feting and parading in de ole european costumes and so when slavery came to an end parading in costumes were traditionally associated with freedom and expression and liberation and excitement and we own ting and show dem how we could wine, and whatever dem could do we does do betta, and all kinda tings like dat –
Den came de indentured labourers who came from India under false pretenses –
Dey inherited the old slave houses and system and experienced a form of slavery that was similar to dey African brethren –
And who eh dead, was sick by de same ting de Africans geh sick wid,
Who eh get killed and who get rape, and who couldn’t go back home was left to settle in the Caribbean and be part of de ‘melting pot’ experience.
And from dem, come de doubles, poulourie, de roti, channa and aloo, curry, and chutney and dey join in de bachannal wid de African and Caribs and who else was left in desolation to build up de islands. And den all ah dem wid one voice together on de streets and wid dey music – de steelpan, calypso, chutney, soca, tamboo bambuu, tassa, reggae continue to celebrate not only de end to slavery! Celebrate independence and republic status, but that in carnival we celebrate togetherness, unity, freedom of expression, liberty, justice, we not going dong de slave route again, dis is we own, de best in de world, forget you worries, dance you dance, beat yuh beat, drink you drink, love yuh love, leh de bachannal ah carnival continue !!!–

And den ah start to tell dem what carnival really is about to me!
But dat is another story – and coco payorl go address it another time,
Yuh listening?
