Trinidad and Tobago: The Basics

Trinidad and Tobago is located at the southern end of the Caribbean island chain.

Trinidad is about 7 miles off the coast of Venezuela in South America; you can see the mountains of Venezuela from Port of Spain on a clear day.

Our time zone is GMT -4.

The Capital city, Port of Spain, is about a 4.5 hour direct flight from New York City, U.S.A., and about 7.5 hours from London, U.K.

About Trinidad

In the Trinidad, the population is very mixed, descended mainly from Africa and India (each about 40% of the total population), but also from Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, even China, and a few from the original Amerindian settlers. There are some wonderful ethnic mixtures, with over 20% of the population claiming mixed ancestry. The two largest religious groups are Roman Catholics (about 25%) and Hindus (about 22%).

English is the official spoken language, but you can also find Hindi, French Patois, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic spoken in some communities.

About Tobago

Tobago is smaller than trinidad, only about 30 x 10 miles or 116 square miles (300 square km), with a ridge of forested mountains down its spine, surrounded by cliffs and beaches and fringing reefs. Tobagonians are a people who quickly remind you of the way it’s supposed to be - being nice to each other, raising children to respect their elders, going to church on Sundays, and they put nature before hotel tower blocks
