The Mighty Sparrow Flies to London for 'Soca Invasion' 2K8
On Saturday, 19th July 2008, East London is in for a treat. The Troxy, at 490 Commercial Road, London, E1 0HX, will host the biggest Soca/Calypso concert that East London has ever seen.
The finest international Soca/Calypso acts, Kevin 'Turn Me On' Lyttle, Jamesy P ('Nookie Tonight'), Fay-Ann 'Get On' Lyons and Denise 'Saucy Wow' Belfon will be flown into London for this spectacular show headlined by the 'King of Calypso', Slinger Francisco, better known as The Mighty Sparrow.
The Mighty Sparrow's carreer spans over 40 years in which he has captivated audiences across the globe with his unrivalled vocal range, wit and on-stage excellence. When approached for 'Soca Invasion' 2K8 he said, 'I love London. I've got many fans in London. I'll give them a good show, however they want it'.
He then sung an impromptu verse of 'Congo Man', adding the familiar animal roars and plenty of laughter.
The Mighty Sparrow insisted on performing 'Congo Man' for Soca Invasion 2K8, saying it is one of his favourite songs. He will be backed by a professional 9 piece band, The Caribbean Soundrax, and band leader, Franklin Joseph-Brown said, 'I love Sparrow. His music is sophisticated so any band that backs him has to be top class.
The Caribbean Soundtrax undertand Sparrow and his music and this gig has got us all very excited. It's a beautiful show and I can't wait to get out on that stage'.
The Mighty Sparrow will excite any
crowd, he has won Trinidad's Calypso Monarch title an astonishing 11 times and in the King of Kings competitions he defeats all other Monarchs who challenge his undefeated status. Despite his great acheivements, The Mighty Sparrow remains firmly rooted in his Caribbean culture.
His only request from the show organisers is his favourite dish, pan fried sole fish and a dressing room next door to 'Saucy Wow', Denise Belfon. He says, 'She's the one who's exciting. I love to watch her perform. That girl can really dance bad'.
The Mighty Sparrow has plenty of respect for his younger co-performers. Of Kevin Lyttle he says, 'The song, 'Turn Me On' was a huge soca hit and did a lot for our music. Kevin has a distinctive voice. He'll be around for a long time. Jamesy P's song ['Nookie Tonight'] will get even a dead man to move.
When you hear that song you have to move something and sing along'. With Fay-Ann Lyons performing her smash hit
'Get On', everyone will be moving something.
Soca Invasion 2K8 is really the London Soca show of the year and cannot be missed. Support acts include Tobago Crusoe, Alexander D. Great and Sceptre. The show will be compared by Soca Professor from Metro Love FM and with music supplied by DJ Scooby and Sugar Dread from Vibes FM, the audience will be simmering nicely before the band hits the stage.
