Trinidad and Tobago and El Salvador Tuesday agreed to scrap the visa requirement for nationals visiting each other’s country.

This is a move which officials believe could result in increased trade and tourism opportunities between the two countries. Trinidad Foreign Minister, Arnold Piggott, who met with his El Salvador counterpart, Francisco Lainez Rivas said Port of Spain could be used as a base by El Salvador to expand its diplomatic ties with other CARICOM member states.

As part of the new initiatives, El Salvador will open an embassy in Port of Spain Wednesday. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1995. The visa waiver agreement would facilitate "freer movement" of people between both countries and would also facilitate stronger business ties between the two countries.

Both countries are also working towards an air services agreement which could result in the newly established Caribbean Airlines servicing the Central American nation.
